Professio”Nole” Athlete of the Week: John Gast

The Professio”Nole” Athlete of the Week for the week of July 21st through the 27th goes to former Florida State left-handed pitcher, John Gast. Gast turned in a solid week for the Memphis Redbirds of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League — a member of the St. Louis Cardinals’ organization.

In a victory over the Iowa Cubs on Friday, Gast allowed just one run on two hits over six innings while striking out six. Over his last two starts, Gast has yielded just a single run and only five combined hits in 12 innings. Gast has given up just three earned runs in his last 23 2/3 innings pitched.

After moving over from the Florida State League earlier in the season, Gast set a Memphis record for consecutive scoreless innings. After a brief slump, Gast has really put it together over his last four starts. Down the stretch, Gast could be a real weapon for a Memphis squad that sits just a game and a half back of the Nashville Sounds in its division.
