Professio”Nole” Athlete of the Week: George McNeill

The Professio”Nole” Athlete of the Week for the week of June 30th through July 6th comes on the golf course and goes to George McNeill. McNeill finished second only to Angel Cabrera over the weekend at the Greenbriar Classic in Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

McNeill finished at -14 for the tournament, but on Sunday, had the best round of the day by shooting a 61. McNeill’s spectacular round came with a heavy heart after learning that his sister, Michele, had lost her bout with cancer earlier that morning.

Though McNeill finished two strokes behind Cabrera, he finished as the top American, four strokes ahead of third-place finisher Webb Simpson. McNeill’s earnings for the tournament total $702,000, but his loss will certainly make a stellar performance bittersweet.

The second place finish is by far McNeill’s best of the year and marks his third finish of 2014 in the top 10. McNeill however, has not won a PGA event since March of 2012.
