It’s only the middle of May and 2016 recruiting is already in full swing. Florida State is one of many teams whose recruiting classes will take center stage this year as it looks to replace multiple starters on each side of the ball. Head coach Jimbo Fisher has been reeling in talent at an excellent level for years now, so don’t expect too much to change in the current cycle. Good news continues to emerge for the Seminoles on the recruiting trail and the past month has seen a few more noteworthy stories form.
Andrew Boselli Commits
FSU filled one of its needs when the son of NFL-great Tony Boselli announced that he was taking his talents to Tallahassee. Boselli hails from Episcopal High School in Jacksonville, the same city where his father was named an All-Pro three straight years. He is currently rated as a 3-star guard standing at 6’4″ and 290 pounds.
A large part of Boselli’s rating is the potential he has to become a starting guard. He’s 290 pounds yet is still filling out his frame and beefing up before he gets to FSU. Boselli himself admitted that he had to lose weight in order to reach his weight class for wrestling. With the focus now being solely on football, he can hopefully reach some of the potential he has before he even steps onto the field. Boselli projects as a guard but has also been told he will most likely be taking some snaps to see what he can do at center.
With solid technique and loads of talent, Boselli seems like a perfect prospect for Rick Trickett. If anyone can help him capitalize on his potential, it’s Trickett. If he keeps filling out, Boselli could get bumped up a star.
Nate Craig-Myers Interest
The rumor machine went into full gear when news broke on May 6th that Craig-Myers had decommitted from Auburn to look at his other options. There had been whispers for a while that the commitment wasn’t very firm and that Craig-Myers was likely to back out and consider other teams — particularly FSU. The recent news just confirmed what many were already thinking. Others didn’t think it would happen, but it just goes to show once again to never doubt FSU and its recruiting pull.
Craig-Myers is an athletic freak with great speed and burst, both of which contribute to his 5-star ranking that includes being named the No. 1 wide receiver in the country. Right now, it is a two-way race between Auburn and Florida State, with many thinking the Seminoles are ahead. With the wide receiver position being as loaded as it is right now, one wonders how Craig-Myers sees himself fitting into the Seminole depth chart. He certainly has the talent to immediately contribute and would make the competition that much more intense.
It helps that Tampa Catholic sent another player, Corey Martinez, to FSU and that current linebacker Jacob Pugh is Craig-Myers’ cousin. Should everything remain constant, FSU is the heavy favorite to land him.
Everett Golson Transferring to FSU?
By now, most FSU fans have heard of both Everett Golson’s transfer and subsequent interest in FSU as his destination. While the opinions and banter will certainly come later, right now it’s just important that we determine how likely it is that Golson comes to Tallahassee. At the moment, almost all signs point to it.
Fisher confirmed Monday that he had talked with Golson about his prospects at FSU and that he would be open to bringing him in. By Friday, it was reported by Tom D’Angelo of the Palm Beach Post that Golson was leaning towards Florida State and was expected to make his decision on Monday. Various transfer issues with SEC teams and the prospect of playing for a highly-regarded quarterback maverick in Fisher has seemingly steered Golson to Tallahassee.
Notre Dame Center Matt Hegarty Coming as Well?
It’s been a while since Hegarty, a center at Notre Dame, announced that he planned to transfer to another school for his final year. Florida State was one of the first visits he took, probably because he saw that essentially the entire offensive line was gone and could use someone with his experience at center. The spring game made this even more apparent after none of the centers really impressed. Alec Eberle was especially disappointing and it looked like FSU took a step back in finding a suitable starter. Hegarty could conceivably solve this issue.
While any connection might be tenuous, Golson transferring could influence where Hegarty decides to go as well. He might want to return to blocking for his quarterback and team up once more for another chance at a great season. If anything, these past few months have taught us all to never discount a possibility in regards to FSU football. There’s some big news on the way, so stay tuned for the latest updates and analysis.
