TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – Presented with a shot at redemption on Saturday, Florida State kicker Roberto Aguayo delivered.
Aguayo’s 26-yard field goal attempt with 0:07 to play sailed through a steady rain and in between the uprights to lift No. 1 FSU to a 20-17 victory over Boston College.
Aguayo, the reigning Lou Groza Award winner and one of the most accurate kickers in college football history, had previously missed for only the third time in his career.
The win extended FSU’s winning streak to 27 and clinched a second consecutive perfect ACC record. The Seminoles can seal back-to-back 12-0 regular seasons when Florida visits next week.
An announced crowd of 82,300 watched as FSU honored its senior class before the game. Hollywood star and Florida State alum Burt Reynolds then planted Osceola’s spear at midfield.
Two of those seniors, Karlos Williams and Nick O’Leary, scored first-half touchdowns as the Seminoles built a 17-10 lead at halftime.
BC, though answered with a tenacious rushing attack that racked up 241 yards on 51 carries.
Quarterback Tyler Murphy tied the game late in the third quarter with a 21-yard TD run.
Saddled with wet conditions for the entire afternoon, FSU’s offense finished with 391 total yards. Quarterback Jameis Winston completed 22 of 32 pass attempts for 281 yards, a touchdown and an interception that deflected off of receiver Rashad Greene’s hands.
Greene overcame a second-half arm injury to post eight catches for 106 yards. In the process, he set a new school record for career receiving yards and consecutive games with a catch (40).
