Florida State was unable to earn a victory this week, falling to Miami and Louisville, but a freshman guard had a spurt for the ages in the Seminoles’ 81-77 loss to Miami on Wednesday night.
Xavier Rathan-Mayes is the Florida State Basketball Player of the Week for the week of February 22nd through March 1st after averaging 23.5 points and 3.5 assists-per-game in two contests.
In Wednesday’s loss at Miami, Rathan-Mayes tied his own Florida State freshman record, scoring 35 points while adding a team-high 5 assists. Most of Rathan-Mayes’ damage however, came in the final five minutes as the redshirt freshman scored 30 points in a 4:39 span and at one point, scored 26 straight FSU points. Rathan-Mayes’ spurt helped cut an 18-point Miami lead down to two, but the Seminoles could not complete the comeback.
In Saturday’s 81-59 home loss to No. 17 Louisville, Rathan-Mayes finished with 12 points, 2 assists and 2 steals.
Rathan-Mayes and the Seminoles will wrap up the regular season on Saturday against Pittsburgh and what a season it’s been for the redshirt freshman. Rathan-Mayes leads Florida State in scoring, averaging 14.3 points and is on pace to have the highest assists-per-game average of any Seminole in over a decade.
