The 2015 season ended one win short of a second straight Women’s College World Series appearance for the Florida State softball team on Friday. After dropping the opener of the best-of-three Super Regional on Thursday, FSU came out on top 6-1 Friday afternoon to force a third game later that evening, but the Lady Volunteers prevailed 2-1.
Tennessee scored runs in the first and fourth innings in the finale of the Super Regional, but the Seminoles struck back with one in the fifth on a RBI single from Morgan Klaevemann. FSU outhit Tennessee 5-3, but couldn’t complete the comeback as Lacey Waldrop took the loss.
Jessica Burroughs was stellar from the circle in the middle game of the series Friday afternoon. Burroughs allowed just four hits and an unearned run in the victory.
At the plate, Jessica Warren was 3-for-3 with a pair of home runs, three runs scored and three RBIs. Ellie Cooper was 2-for-3 with a run and RBI in the only victory of the Super Regional for the Seminoles.
The game FSU may look back on however, was Thursday night’s opener. Florida State let a 2-0 lead slip away in a 3-2 loss.
Florida State raced to the lead behind a RBI double by Victoria Daddis and a solo home run from Warren, but Tennessee won the game by scoring a run in each of the final three innings. Meghan Gregg won the game for the Lady Vols with a walk-off single in the seventh to score Lexi Overstreet.
Florida State finishes the season with a record of 49-14 while Tennessee moves on to face one of its SEC rivals. Kentucky and top-seeded Florida will square off in a best-of-three Super Regional with the winner opening the Women’s College World Series against Tennessee.
