While it was anything but for Florida State University athletics, it was a quiet week for former Seminoles playing professional sports. As a result, the Professio”Nole” Athlete of the Week for the week of December 1st through the 7th goes to a NFL placekicker.
The longest field goal made in the NFL in Week 14 and the third longest this season belonged to former Florida State kicker and the only two-time Lou Groza Award winner, Sebastian Janikowski.
Janikowski got the scoring started for the Oakland Raiders on Sunday in a 24-13 win over the San Francisco 49ers with a 57-yard field goal. In the NFL this season, only Buffalo’s Dan Carpenter and Seattle’s Steven Hauschka have made kicks from longer as both hit from 58 yards out earlier in the year.
Janikowski did not attempt another field goal, but made all three of his extra points and had two kickoffs go for touchbacks.
Janikowski is now 13-for-15 kicking field goals on the season with his only two misses coming from beyond 50 yards. With his 57-yard make on Sunday, Janikowski now has 47 career field goals of at least 50 yards. He sits only five back of former Detroit Lions’ kicker Jason Hanson for the most in NFL history with 52.
