FSU Softball Blanks UCF to Earn Super Regionals Trip

Florida State, the nation’s No. 9 national seed, clinched a third straight trip to the NCAA Super Regionals on Sunday with a 5-0 shutout of UCF.

Jessica Burroughs was downright dominant on the mound for FSU, tossing a 2-hit shutout. She struck out six Knights in the process without allowing a walk.

At the plate, ACC Freshman of the Year Jessica Warren supplied the power by driving in three of Florida State’s five runs. Morgan Kalevemann and Macey Cheatham each scored twice as FSU took the game and Tallahassee Regional.

Sunday’s contest between the teams lacked the drama of Saturday’s morning meeting when UCF took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the 7th. Maddie O’Brien’s solo home run tied the game for FSU before Alex Powers won it two batters later with a RBI triple to score Warren.

The Seminoles opened the regional with a 5-1 victory over Dartmouth on Friday after a nearly 4-hour rain delay. Burroughs earned the win, allowing just a hit in 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. O’Brien and Ellie Cooper each drove in a pair of runs.

FSU may have gone a perfect 3-0 in the regional, but to advance to the Women’s College World Series for a second straight year, the Seminoles will need to win away from home. Florida State will face No. 8 Tennessee in the Knoxville Super Regional. The winner of the 3-game series will head to Oklahoma City.
