Florida State fans got a first glimpse at the 2015 squad on Saturday as the Garnet met the Gold in the annual spring game. The Gold team came away with a 38-17 victory, but a number of players shined in each aspect of the game. The Noled Out staff hands out game balls to the top performers from Saturday’s FSU spring game.
Offense
Mike Ferguson’s Game Ball: De’Andre Johnson, QB
A true freshman and early enrollee, De’Andre Johnson looked to have a very good grasp of Jimbo Fisher’s offense. Johnson went 8-for-11 passing for 155 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Johnson may have added a score on the ground, but quarterbacks were considered down once touched.
Clint Eiland’s Game Ball: Ja’Vonn Harrison, WR
A largely forgotten piece to Florida State’s talented corps of young wide receivers, Ja’Vonn Harrison played very well in Saturday’s spring game for the Garnet. With many of his reps coming with the first team, Harrison reeled in five passes for 94 yards with a long of 36.
Jon Marchant’s Game Ball: Sean Maguire, QB
Though he didn’t throw a touchdown, Sean Maguire passed for a game-high 289 yards on Saturday. Maguire complete 22 of his 44 passes, but was intercepted twice.
Defense
Mike Ferguson’s Game Ball: Lorenzo Featherston, DE
Florida State’s 6’7″ sophomore defensive end Lorenzo Featherston was a standout for the Garnet team on Saturday. After missing a large part of the second half of the 2014 season, Featherston led his team in the spring game with nine stops including a game-high 2 sacks.
Clint Eiland’s Game Ball: Jalen Ramsey, CB
As usual, Florida State defensive back Jalen Ramsey was all over the field. In his return to the cornerback position, Ramsey finished with 7 tackles, a tackle for loss, a pass breakup and a forced fumble early in the second half for the Gold team.
Jon Marchant’s Game Ball: Rick Leonard, DE
Sophomore Rick Leonard’s stat line wasn’t overly impressive as he recorded just 3 tackles, but Leonard was a mainstay in the Garnet backfield on Saturday. At 6’7″ and 275 pounds, Leonard is a very gifted athlete and looks to be a contributor in 2015.
Special Teams
Mike Ferguson and Clint Eiland’s Game Ball: Roberto Aguayo, K
All-American Roberto Aguayo continued to show off his big leg on Saturday, going 2-for-3 on field goal attempts which included makes from 47 and 56 yards out. His lone miss was short on a 62-yard attempt. Aguayo connected on all six of his extra point attempts.
Jon Marchant’s Game Ball: Cason Beatty, P
Punting for both teams, senior Cason Beatty had a solid showing in Saturday’s spring game. Two of Beatty’s four punts went at least 50 yards and he finished the day with a long of 51 yards. On four total punts, Beatty averaged better than 44 yards-per-punt with two being downed inside the 20-yard-line.
