The freshman duo of Malik Beasley and Dwayne Bacon have led Florida State through the early parts of the 2015-16 season, but this past week, it’s been last season’s leading scorer who has been the go-to guy for the Seminoles.
Redshirt sophomore guard Xavier Rathan-Mayes is the Florida State Basketball Player of the Week for the week of November 30th through December 6th after filling up the box score for the Seminoles.
In two games this past week, Rathan-Mayes averaged 19 points, 5.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and two steals. In Wednesday’s 78-75 overtime loss at Iowa, Rathan-Mayes scored 15 points and led FSU with five assists.
In Sunday’s 76-71 victory over Virginia Commonwealth in Atlanta, Rathan-Mayes led or was tied for the FSU lead in every major statistical category. Rathan-Mayes finished with 23 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Rathan-Mayes was also 4-for-5 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc, including a triple with four minutes to play that put the Seminoles ahead for good. He also came up with a timely steal in the final minute to help cement the FSU victory.
For the season, Rathan-Mayes is one of three Seminoles to average in double-figures scoring with 12.6 points-per-game. Rathan-Mayes leads the ACC by averaging more than six assists per contest and has better than a 2:1 assist-to-turnover ratio. Rathan-Mayes and FSU will host Southeastern Louisiana on Sunday.
