Duke’s Allen, Florida State’s Bacon claim first honors of 2015-16 season
GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – Duke sophomore Grayson Allen has been named the first Atlantic Coast Conference Basketball Player of the Week for the 2015-16 season, while Florida State’s Dwayne Bacon claimed Freshman of the Week honors.
Allen was dominant in Duke’s wins over Siena and Bryant as part of the 2K Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project, averaging 27.0 points on .516 shooting from the floor, .417 shooting from beyond the arc and .944 shooting from the line. After coming up one point shy of his career high with 26 against Siena in the Blue Devils’ opener, the Jacksonville, Florida, native exploded for a career-best 28 points against Bryant on Saturday while also establishing a new personal best with a game-high six assists. Allen’s 54 points in Duke’s first two games were just one shy of tying the program record for points in the first two games of a season, a mark of 55 set by Johnny Dawkins in 1983-84. In addition to his 27.0 points per game on the week, Allen also averaged 4.0 rebounds, a team-high 4.0 assists and 1.0 steals. He was 8-of-8 from the free throw line against Siena before going 9-of-10 against Bryant.
Bacon enjoyed arguably the best debut game in Florida State history with a game-high 23 points, a game-high eight rebounds, two steals and one assist in 24 minutes played as a starter in the Seminoles’ season-opening 109-62 win over Nicholls State on Sunday. Bacon’s 23 points scored are the most by a freshman in his first game at Florida State. The 6-foot-7 Lakeland, Florida, native led the Seminoles with nine field goals made. He also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds as Florida State outrebounded the Colonels by a 42-21 margin. Bacon scored the first five points of the game for the Seminoles as he made the first two field goal attempts of his collegiate career. He scored on a 3-point shot at the 19:42 mark (the Seminoles’ first possession of the game) and added a jumper at the 19:14 mark to give Florida State a 5-0 lead (on the Seminoles’ second possession of the game). Bacon scored nine first-half points and 14 second-half points as Florida State led by as many as 28 in the first half and by as many as 48 during the game.
